Nuttall Oak – Shipping Fall 2026

Nuttall oak is a red oak similar to Shumard Oak, but this one can tolerate wetter conditions. It naturally grows in the upper terraces of floodplains where its root system can be underwater periodically, but it also does fine in drier sites when established. Seeds tend to be much larger than Shumard Oak, and they also drop later, sometimes into November. Of the deciduous red oaks, this one also tends to hold onto its leaves longer, often into December. This one does tend to be slightly pickier about soil conditions, disliking alkaline conditions and doing best in neutral to acidic pH.

Details

The Nuttall Oak is a fast-growing native from the red oak family that settles nicely into damp locations and delivers dependable late-season mast when deer need it most. Reaching a towering 60-80’, the Nuttall thrives in full sun and handles heavy clay, poorly drained bottomlands, intermittent flooding, and even occasional dry spells once established. It prefers neutral to acidic soils. As a red oak, it tends to crop consistently, with acorns that linger and fall gradually, sustaining wildlife through the rut and into leaner months. Plant in groups for better pollination and bigger yields, or scatter among earlier mast producers like white oaks or sawtooths to stretch the food supply across the season. In USDA zones 6-9, the Nuttall Oak is a resilient, no-nonsense pick for landowners improving deer habitat, especially in flood-prone or bottomland areas. It grows quicker than most oaks—often producing in 5-15 years—and the worn trails or empty caps beneath it show the payoff.
